Genesis
In the past few years, the distribution of home-made audio content via The Internet, colloquially known as "Podcasting", has become all the bloody rage amongst the cool kids (in the house, word, yo). The Rubber Chicken would be damned if they were going to let some upstart youngsters redefine the meaning of the word cool when they had collectively spent so many years of their lives clawing their way into spitting distance of it. So they got a bunch of people to sit in front of microphones and blather on in ridiculous voices before unleashing the terrifying result upon the web at large.
Statistics are inconclusive as to the effect it has had on the national murder rate.
Production Process
The Rubber Chicken Podcast is, as anyone who waited nearly a YEAR for Season 2 will tell you, not subject to a strict schedule, nor a rigorous and regimented production process. So you're actually lucky that it gets done at all, you ungrateful slobs.
For the majority of the Podcast's run, there has been little solid collaboration between contributors. Generally, individual staff members will either record material of their own, or write pieces of material for others, and these disparate pieces of content will be pulled together at the whims of the editors of the episodes (usually Tim and Alastair ). Due to the large geographical (and occasionally emotional) distance between most TRC staff members, group recording sessions are unfortunately quite difficult, and usually limited to people living in the same city (Tim, Chris and Alastair; Andrey and Gord, etc...), but careful recording and editing is often sufficient to convey the illusion of actual group scenes.
As the Podcast matures and the style develops further, there has been rapidly increasing emphasis placed upon pre-planning and close collaboration. All episodes of Season 2 will have overarching themes, and hence require a great deal of planning and need sketches to be written especially for each episode, rather than just being thrown out willy-nilly. Also, episode 3 of Season 2 ("King Podcast and the Knights of the Roundtable") has the honour of being the first ever Podcast episode to be scripted in its entirety, an obvious requirement, given the theme and setting of the episode. (The fully scripted 2006 Christmas Special doesn't count, because Andrey wrote the script to that and he's from the Soviet Union or something. He probably grafitied it on a piece of the Berlin Wall.)
This is not to say that the entire production has been an exercise in randomness. Right from the beginning, certain ground rules have been laid down for how individual episodes and the seasons as a whole are structured:
- Each episode opens with a "cold open," an introductory "pre-credits" mini-skit.
- Following this is always an intro from The Announcer, in his ludicrously verbose and idiosyncratic style.
- Each season of the podcast features a series of running gags and/or segments, which appear every episode. For the first season, these were a reference to the Land of Canoes, a joke from Sir Nigel Haversmith IV, and Andrey's Thought of the Day. The second season will feature Celebrity Anecdotes with Andrey, and History With Harold Holt.
- Each episode features a music number, ranging from short impromptu ditties like the original Land of Canoes song, right up to the 4-minute, lavishly produced I Feel Pretty Good Blues.
- The episode ends with The Announcer as well, in the so-called "next week" segment.
- The "next week" is always followed by a brief callback to a gag from earlier in the episode.
(Season 2, of course, being the rude upstart it is, has flouted several of these nebulous rules on more than one occasion, and may have to be slapped down for it.)
At the end of each season, the Podcast recording process has generated enough bloopers for the production of an "OUTcast," a special episode collecting all the best flubs and stuff-ups the team can manage, not to mention all the censored stuff about the Jews and their international bankers' conspiracy.
