Ethel is a fictional character used by Alastair to incite feelings of fear and bewilderment in people not accustomed to the concept of satire. In his efforts to lampoon these people, he published a series of essays under Ethel's name, beginning with this one, making sure to get as many facts about the series as possible completely wrong in the hope of generating amusing hate mail. Such mail did in fact eventuate, in very large quantities, and continued to do so for years after the original essay's publication. Alastair's increacingly absurdt corespondance with some of the more tenacious letter-writers is chronicled here and here.
